Money well spent

Starting March 1, DirecTV is raising its rates for TiVo subscribers from $4.99 to $5.99 per month.

At least I'm paying less than you suckers with cable.

Meanwhile, TiVo CEO Tom Rogers said this week that the company may start giving away free TiVo boxes to anyone who wants one, in order get more people sign up for its service. The problem for TiVo is that 70 percent of its 4 million customers use DirecTV, which has stopped selling TiVo in favor its own brand of DVR. Since DirecTV gives its proprietary DVRs away for free, who would buy a TiVo-brand DVR?

Well, yes, assuming you didn't buy the settop box. Otherwise you need to figure in the depreciating cost of that. When Comcast has a box even better than the tapes HD on both tuners while I watch something one I rent for $10/month now, I'll swap out for that.

Is DirectTV coming to your house to do the same?

DirecTV has HD DVRs too. Their HD service is $10/mo extra. The HD DVRs are free for a one room upgrade.

I think their real problem is that they use weird capitalization.

It's true -- the word TiVo looks like it stands for something. But it doesn't. (That I know of.)
