No one goes there anymore -- it's too crowded
Who knew tacos and enchiladas could be so controversial?Lauriol Plaza, a trendy Mexican restaurant between Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle, is one of the most controversial eateries in D.C.
Everyone seems to have strong feelings. Critics say it is vastly overrated and dismiss the food as not being worthy enough to justify the packed bar of young people sipping margaritas waiting for a table. Yet clearly many people love the restaurant, or there wouldn't be big crowds in the first place.
But why do people have to hate Lauriol Plaza so much? Just because a place is popular doesn't mean it's bad. Even if it is indeed overrated, that just means it should be rated a bit lower -- not that it should be discarded entirely.

If you care about food, go to Mixtek. That's all there is to it. If you care about being around the Beautiful People, go to Lauriol Plaza.
It's Mixtec, but I see your point -- beautiful people require storefronts that look more appealing than this.
I have had some pretty awesome meals there, when I lived there four years ago. Great fish. I'm kind of surprised that it hasn't fizzled out a bit, like most places do after being trendy for a while. I guess because DC is so much smaller than Chicago, there just aren't as many places. But I do have good memories of that place -- except for the waits. It was Heather Sacks's fave.
Our wait last night: one hour.
it was less than an hour. 40 minutes I think.
And Josh, I have to say, I have never had good food at Mixtec.
I don't know how to rebut this. I've never had a bad meal there. And the veggie fajitas -- always ordered by Christine -- have mushrooms in them. It's changed my life, or at least the part of it where I cook fajitas at how.
mmmmmmmmm, Lauriol Plaza. I forgot about that place. Food & Friends people used to go there with some regularity, and I remember everyone always ordered the Sunshine Salad. At least I think that's what it was. Yummy!
