Welcome to Staten Island
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Since it costs $9 to drive across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge from Brooklyn onto Staten Island, I tried to enjoy the experience and get my money's worth.
But the whole experience was over too fast. And it didn't come with a meal.
What a disappointment.

Funny! I'm just reading about that bridge now in Robert Moses "Power Broker". Interesting stuff, but of course I can't remember any of it right now.
Ah... now I remember. The towers are so tall and so far apart that they were designed to take into consideration the curvature of the earth. The tops of the towers at 1 5/8 inches further apart than their bases.
Hey, that's pretty cool. I did notice how tall those towers were...
nycroads.com is the place to go for more about the Verranzano or any other highway in New York. The man behind it (who was a big fan of Moses) has similiar sites for D.C., Boston, Philly, Montreal and Chicago.
I'm about 20% through The Power Broker. Huge book, but interesting.
