Can't spare a square

Why is toilet paper always double ply?

Why not make it single ply... but with a thicker ply that equals the thickness of regular double ply?1

1I think that's the most I've ever used the word ply. Not just in one sentence, but ever.

You've never seen Cottonelle TP - it's one-ply, but not in a bad way.

I shudder to think where you wrote this post from.

I think 2 ply (ie two thin sheets) is easier to break down in septic systems for sure.. dunno if this advantage helps city sewer. with a small air pocket between the plys it also adds to the perceived "softness" on your rear. I think they inject air into the paper when they are pulling it to increase softness - there may be some manufacturing advantage with doing that in thin sheets then thick ones. who knows...
