Real Virginia
LEESBURG, Va. — Yesterday I attended my first presidential political rally since 1992.1 People started lining up at 10 a.m. for Barack Obama's 5:30 p.m. appearance. As a result, many people weren't able to get in.
After making my way inside the gate, I turned around to take a picture of the unlucky people who didn't make it in (see above).
1My dad took me to a Jessie Jackson rally on the steps of the Madison capitol in 1984. Four years later, my parents took me to see Paul Simon (the senator from Illinois, not the musician) campaign somewhere on the UW campus. At some point during his speech, the candidate said that he wanted to build a better America for the children of America, and he pointed to me. (I was probably the only kid there.) In 1992, I skipped an afternoon of high school to see a Bill Clinton rally. That's it. That's my full roster of presidential rallies.

Which of these photos are from the Paul Simon rally? (Actually, I liked that guy. Not that I could vote in 1988, but he was my first choice. (My parents were for Dukakis, so I didn't tell them. I really disliked Tom Harkin back then.) (Why do I think I'm getting my years confused?)
"Real Virginia" is apparently the part of the commonwealth that takes in more government funding than it contributes. "Fake Virginia" is the part the subsidizes "Real Virginia."
