Well, I have had the surgery and although the recovery is quick, it does require a few days to mend. So you would have to identify a period in the last year when he was totally out of the spotlight. As I recall, the first day you have to wear paddles with slits cut in to them over your eyes to avoid dust and dirt.
Have you considered contacts as a possible explanation?
