MLK Memorial vs. Han Solo

Yesterday, we discussed the MLK Memorial's similarities with the Vietnam Memorial. But the similarities don't end there.1 It turns out that the MLK Memorial's depiction of the civil rights hero brings to mind Han Solo's plight in "Return of the Jedi."

1I have a long history of dissecting look-alikes, you see.

MLK Memorial vs. Vietnam Memorial

A wing of the newly unveiled MLK Memorial (above) reminds me a bit of the Vietnam Memorial (below).

Then again, it's not that memorials have to look totally different from each other. We have clearly decided as a people that the best way to memorialize wars and leaders is through words carved into stone. (Although it's best to use accurate quotes from the leader you are memorializing, which the MLK Memorial didn't do.)

Later this week, I'll have more to say about things that look like the new MLK Memorial.

Kabob King of Kabob Kabob

With what may be the greatest restaurant name of all time, the Kabob King of Kabob Kabob has moved into 1018 Vermont Ave. NW, the former home of Bao Restaurant.

Wait, what are they the king of, again?

Speed limit: 21 mph

LEWES, Del. -- The locals are very precise with their speed limits around here.

Pants that make you thin

LEWES, Del. -- These pants promise to help you drop one size instantly. This doesn't just mean they're numbered lower than other pants, although that was my first thought. Evidently, they have some sort of system that pulls them tighter once they're on.

Mexican jumping beans

LEWES, Del. -- If you're ever looking for a town that sells Mexican jumping beans at 6:30 a.m., I know just the place.

Buying local

Grocery stores have different definitions of what it means to label their food as locally grown, reports TBD's Jenny Rogers:

  • Safeway: If produce can reach the store in less than an eight-hour drive, it’s local.
  • Walmart: If produce is grown within 450 miles of distribution centers, it’s local.
  • Whole Foods: If produce has traveled less than seven hours by car or truck, it’s local.
  • Wegmans: If produce is grown in-state, it’s local.
  • Harris Teeter: If produce is grown in-state, it’s local. If it’s grown out of state but traveled less than six hours from farm to store, it’s regional.
