Don't call it that

As you probably know by now, I am a Beverly Hills 90210 fan. (Everybody has a weakness.)

Having seen every episode 12 billion times, I decided this week to graduate to The O.C., which began running on cable.

I've only seen the first four episodes so far, but I can tell that I'll be hooked.

It took awhile to figure out how I knew Kelly Rowan, who plays Kirsten Cohen on The O.C. Then IMDB helped me out: She was the single mother Mike Seaver dated in that episode of Growing Pains I mentioned last month.

Oh, and if you think Growing Pains was a TV weakness every bit as strong as 90210, you're wrong — I could have stopped any time. (And I did!)

Growing Pains has gotten a lot worse with age. I can't believe I ever liked it.

Definitely didn't age well. I think they tried to pull ever trick in the book toward the end to keep people watching -- new baby, Leonardo DiCaprio as a homeless student, etc.

Personally I don't see the O.C. aging well either. I only caught a few scattered episodes, but the latter ones aren't nearly as fun as the early ones.

I've always thought USC cheerleaders were pretty classy (to the extent that such a classification is possible in the cheerleading world). They wear long-sleeved white turtlenecks, rather than the skimpy tops donned by most cheerleading teams. But yesterday I discovered that a USC Song Girl named Megan Ramer doesn't wear underwear. Paperweights have become paperweights

When something goes unused or becomes obsolete, it's said to become a paperweight. Is your cellphone slow and out of date? It's become a paperweight. Is your laptop too slow to use? It's become a paperweight. Do you never use your Apple Vision Pro? It's become a paperweight. Weirdly, paper itself has become a paperweight. People do their work on laptops, tablets, and phones. Most homes don't have printers. Not only do we not need paperweights, we barely need paper!
