Tale of the tape

Until recently, I thought those little self-retracting measuring tools were called tape measurers. It turns out that they are tape measures.

Whenever a player at Milwaukee County Stadium hit a home run, the scoreboard had a "Tale Of The Tape" display that would say, for instance, that Rob Deer's homer had traveled 412 feet. It always bothered me that it wasn't much of a "tale" at all.

If they wanted to tell a real tale, it should have said: "Once upon a time there was a home run. It was 412 feet long. The end."

Those things were always off by, like, 100 feet. I swear, it would have said a pop fly to the shortstop traveled 250 feet.

I never understood to lure. I mean, it went over the wall, didn't it?

I've always thought USC cheerleaders were pretty classy (to the extent that such a classification is possible in the cheerleading world). They wear long-sleeved white turtlenecks, rather than the skimpy tops donned by most cheerleading teams. But yesterday I discovered that a USC Song Girl named Megan Ramer doesn't wear underwear. Paperweights have become paperweights

When something goes unused or becomes obsolete, it's said to become a paperweight. Is your cellphone slow and out of date? It's become a paperweight. Is your laptop too slow to use? It's become a paperweight. Do you never use your Apple Vision Pro? It's become a paperweight. Weirdly, paper itself has become a paperweight. People do their work on laptops, tablets, and phones. Most homes don't have printers. Not only do we not need paperweights, we barely need paper!
