Down with zones

As everyone in this city knows, D.C. cab drivers are on strike today to protest the impending switch to metered fares.

They've been planning this Halloween event for awhile, which gave hotels the chance to organize extra shuttle-bus services and everyone else time to figure out other ways of getting around — like walking and taking the Metro.

Basically, the strike is causing people to realize how easy — and cheap — life would be like without taxis.

When some drunk kid from Catholic U. is trying to hail a cab tonight, heading home from Georgetown, it will be a rather different situation than a tourist staying at a nice hotel.

My point, though, is that now that everyone has been given so much advanced warning, that drunk kid has figured out how to get home via Metro or bus. And he may find it to be quite a bit cheaper.

Thank you, by the way, for thinking of my neighborhood drunks. Maybe I'll give them a ride home.

Well, they're all at the Front Page, not in Georgetown, if you're looking for them.

Well, good. They can take the Red Line. The taxi strike may as well have been a big commercial for the Red Line.

They can sober up while they are sitting for 20 extra minutes because of track work.
