Round on the outside, high in the middle

Some interesting facts from Jon Weingbach's article in today's Wall Street Journal about Ohio State University's athletics department:
  • Ohio State's athletic budget this year is $109 million.
  • The school spends $110,000 for each of its 980 athletes on its 36 varsity teams.
  • That figure is triple the amount the university spends per undergraduate on education.1
1On the other hand, the article reveals that Ohio State's athletic department earns a net profit, which it used this year for $12 million in tuition scholarships, $5 million to help fund renovations to the main library on campus and $1.7 million to the school's academic-support center to pay for tutors and "life skills" workshops for athletes.
