Dilbert

Scott Adams gave an interview recently in which he said the following: "I worked around engineers for most of my 16 years of corporate life. Dilbert is actually designed after one person in particular. Interestingly, that person is not aware that he is the model for Dilbert. I didn’t know him well and never mentioned it to him."

Interesting.

Someone is walking around right now unaware that he is the model for Dilbert.

Sure, the character in question is a dopey loner who can never get anyone around him to listen to his ideas. But if I were the model for Dilbert, I'd want to know about it.

If only for the royalty checks.

As far as I know he never met or worked with Scott Adams, but this could explain why for years my dad (an engineer) hated Dilbert. He said it was too close to real life. Maybe he didn't know just how close. But now that he's retired he seems to enjoy it more. My dad's no dopey loner. But no one listens to his ideas. At least no one in my family does :)

When something goes unused or becomes obsolete, it's said to become a paperweight. Is your cellphone slow and out of date? It's become a paperweight. Is your laptop too slow to use? It's become a paperweight. Do you never use your Apple Vision Pro? It's become a paperweight. Weirdly, paper itself has become a paperweight. People do their work on laptops, tablets, and phones. Most homes don't have printers. Not only do we not need paperweights, we barely need paper!
