A half-empty cereal bowl

Which sounds more nutritious: 1/2 of a whole grain, or one full portion of half-grain?

I can't believe I may actually know this -- based on something I read not more that a week ago -- but apparently the dietary recommendation is to make sure that your whole grain foods get at least half their grain from whole grain, not refined grain. I'm guessing that's what the 1/2 is referring to.

"Whole grains are cereal grains that retain the bran and germ as well as the endosperm, in contrast to refined grains, which retain only the endosperm." -wiki

it means it's half "whole grain" and half "refined"
