Bloomers

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — I'll admit that I was confused to come across a sidewalk memorial to Amelia Bloomer here at the corner of Willow and Pearl streets. What attachment do Iowans have with the women's right advocate? Do the women here have a special place in their hearts for the women's garment that bears her name?

It turns out that she lived in Iowa. And died right here in Council Bluffs.

In any case, it's better than the memorial I saw in Franklin County.

I always thought bloomers were from Bloomer, WI. Maybe that was just family lore.

Perhaps the town of Bloomer is named after the woman. Wikipedia? Help us out here.

Seems Bloomer, WI is named after an opportunist from Galena, IL named Mr. Bloomer who had nothing to do with pants for women. Sigh, another childhood dream shattered.

When something goes unused or becomes obsolete, it's said to become a paperweight. Is your cellphone slow and out of date? It's become a paperweight. Is your laptop too slow to use? It's become a paperweight. Do you never use your Apple Vision Pro? It's become a paperweight. Weirdly, paper itself has become a paperweight. People do their work on laptops, tablets, and phones. Most homes don't have printers. Not only do we not need paperweights, we barely need paper!
